Copperhead Consulting, Inc. has designed and implemented an in-depth workshop focusing on the use of radio transmitters for the study of bats. The purpose of the class is to educate potential clients, consulting firm biologists, and state and federal agency biologists on how to implement a radio telemetry bat project.
Information on data types that can be collected with this technology, as well as limitations, is discussed.Classroom activities include transmitters activation, instructions detailing how to attach transmitters to bats, and how to use receiver for locating roosts or collecting foraging data.
Part of the workshop involves field training to track a radio-fitted bat.Activated transmitters are placed in trees to simulate the tracking of bats; participants gain an appreciation for the rigors and problems associated with radio-tracking bats.
